Easter 2024

Helo Everyone

I hope that you are well and looking forward to a break over the Easter holidays. It has been a busy time at Bro Edern once again, with so much to fit into two half terms of five weeks each. These last few weeks are always a critical time for pupils sitting exams, and the majority have been diligently completing coursework and practical work, and practising for oral exams. Thanks in advance to all the staff who will be holding revision sessions over the holidays in order to help our pupils succeed.

After Easter

After Easter, we will revisit our expectations once again, as we begin an important new term which brings this academic year to a close. We will once again remind pupils of the content of our Agwedd at Ddysgu (Attitude towards Learning) posters, which can be seen in all classrooms. These outline our constant daily expectations at Bro Edern – speaking Welsh, punctuality, attendance, equipment, and a positive attitude towards work.

School Uniform

We will be checking school uniform after the holidays, to ensure that everyone meets our expectations, which are clear and known to everyone. If you need any uniform items, please visit YC Sports during the holidays, or the Swap Shop on the first Wednesday after the holidays. Please note that everyone needs a real school jumper. The extra curricular hoodie, or the Real Madrid tour hoodie are not part of our daily school uniform. Pupils should wear their school jumper every day.

We would like to remind parents at the same time that pupils need a school bag every day, which should include a pencil case, the school’s Chromebook fully charged, books and resources for the day and PE kit. Mobile phones should live at the bottom of the bag – more below.

Please remember that some of you may be able to apply for the School Essentials Grant, which helps with the cost of uniforms etc. You can read the full details by clicking here.

The first Swap Shop of the new term will be held on Wednesday 10 April after school. You are welcome to drop by to collect pre-loved uniform from the Cyfeillion, our PTA.

Mobile Phones

Thank you to the vast majority of our pupils who follow our clear mobile phone policy, by switching their phones off completely every day between 8:30am and 3pm and placing them at the bottom of their bag. If any communication is required between the home and the pupil or the school, that needs to be done via a phone call to the school reception or an e-mail to the head of year. If there is a real emergency, and a pupil needs to contact home urgently, they can go to the office to phone. Recently, a handful of pupils have been included in a scheme where they have to hand in their phone every morning, because they have consistently broken the school’s mobile phone policy. This scheme will continue in the new term.

As in many schools, at the start of the new term we will continue with our mobile phone policy, asking any pupil who has a mobile phone in sight, to put it safely in reception until the end of the school day. We will not give a warning, as we have explained enough times that no phones are to be visible on the school premises. Thanks very much to you as parents for your support of this essential policy.

There is a lot of research underway, exploring the impact of mobile phone usage on young people, as seen in this article from SchoolsWeek, which discusses the banning of mobile phones from schools in England:

“Smartphone use is an addiction with profound personal and social consequences that stretch well beyond the classroom and into every segment of our lives. Its impact is most profound on the youngest addicts: our students …

Although the causes are multifactorial, a growing body of evidence suggests that excessive smartphone use is a significant factor in many adverse mental health, physical health, developmental and educational problems. The negative impact of smartphone use on attention span and its generation of addictive-type dependencies, is well documented.”

We recognise that pupils are only with us at school for part of the day, and the situation is beyond our control after 3pm, but the policy means that our pupils can spend their school day free from temptation, knowing that their friends are also not on their phones, knowing they won’t be filmed or photographed, and that they will not be bombarded with notifications pinging all day. The school needs to be a safe place for the pupils, free from their phones, so that they can focus on their work and their future.

Communication with the school

Many thanks to the parents who contact us politely, appropriately and in a timely manner to discuss various aspects of school life that can arise from time to time.

Could we ask once again for our parents to be polite and patient with our office, reception and teaching staff, whether on the school grounds, on the phone or via e-mail. Please remember that parental communications between home and school should be through the Head of Year. Parents are not to e-mail other teachers. Many thanks in advance for your co-operation.

New e-mail addresses for staff

Every member of staff’s e-mail changes immediately after Easter, as we transfer to Hwb, at the request of the county. Please don’t forget the DOT between the forename and surname. Here are the new contact details:

Cost of School Meals and Debts

After Easter, Cardiff Council will raise the price of school meals for the new financial year. The Meal of the Day price for pupils in secondary schools will go from £3.30 to £3.40. The price of some individual items also goes up a few pence.

It’s crucial that pupils do not go into debt in the canteen. It is run as a business by the county’s Catering Department. Please would you install the “Auto top-up” on your child’s account? This means they will not go into debt. There are some debts on pupils’ accounts in year 11, 12 and 13. At the end of the exams, you will need to check the latest situation – pupils will not be able to get their exam results in August until the debt has been cleared.

We understand that this is a challenging time for many people in terms of money, work and wages. If you believe that your child is entitled to claim Free School Meals, then please make sure that you apply. No-one at school will be any the wiser – everyone goes to the same lunch queue, and the Meal of the Day amount just automatically appears on your child’s thumb account daily.

To apply for free school meals, please click here.

Staffing

There will be some staffing changes after Easter. Miss Eurgain Vaughan Evans, Leader of the Welsh Department, is going on maternity leave. We wish her all the best over the next few months, as she embarks on a new chapter in her life. Mr Wil Davies will return to us from the wild west and will teach the majority of Miss Evans’s lessons. Miss Elin Lloyd will lead the department in Miss Evans’s absence.

Miss Rhiannon Phillips-Griffiths, Geography and Tourism, is also going on maternity leave. We would also like to wish her all the best. Mr Aled Lewis, who has been doing great work in the Porth, will take on most of Miss Phillips-Griffiths’ lessons.

Miss Megan Rose, English, starts a new job as second in the English Department at Ysgol Garth Olwg. We wish her the best of luck in her new job. After Easter, Mrs Judith Phillips, who is an experienced member of staff and has taught English and languages with us for a while, will take on Miss Rose’s timetable.

Immediately after Easter, Mrs Rita Bevan-Williams starts a part-time sabbatical year with WJEC, working on the Humanities qualifications for the new curriculum. She will continue to teach lessons at Bro Edern on Wednesdays, and the remainder of her lessons will be shared between Mrs Cooper and Mr Pritchard, our headteacher, who is an experienced historian.

In the second week of the new term, Mr Gary Ellis will return to us from his extended paternity leave. We look forward to welcoming him back to Bro Edern.

In the third week after the holidays, Mr Osian George will start his new job digitising the Agored Cymru qualifications for the new curriculum. Mr George has delayed starting his new job, in order to finish teaching all his exam classes. The pupils have been told for some time about the deadlines for all their Bac work, because Mr George needs to spend Easter and the first two weeks of the new term marking all the work with Miss Ainsworth and uploading everything to the WJEC website before starting with Agored Cymru. We wish him all the best with his new job and thank him for all his digital, design and teaching contributions throughout his time at Bro Edern. A new Bac Leader will start with us in September.

As a result of these changes, there will be some adjustments to the timetable. This should automatically sync on ClassCharts at the end of the holidays.

Revision Sessions over Easter

During the holidays, a number of staff members will hold revision sessions at school. If they are relevant to your child, please make sure that they attend these important sessions punctually. You need to go through the following timetables carefully with your child, if they are in an exam year. They will be able to help with the translation.

This is the timetable for the two weeks of Easter holidays; it includes revision sessions for years 11, 12 and 13:

Please remember the lunchtime / after school revision sessions which will also continue after Easter, following the same timetable as before:

Exam Arrangements

WJEC external exams will start on 9 May. Pupils from years 10, 11, 12 and 13 sit exams between this date and the end of June. Here are some important points for those sitting exams:

  • Morning exams – everyone needs to arrive to register under the canopy by 8:30am. Please leave plenty of time, as there will be heavy traffic. All pupils across Wales MUST start all exams at the same time. This is not our rule, and we could receive several spot checks from WJEC at any point.
  • Afternoon exams – everyone needs to arrive to register under the canopy by 12:30pm
  • Full and smart school uniform, including black leather, or leather-looking shoes
  • Transparent pencil case and relevant equipment
  • Maths equipment, including a calculator is essential for year 11
  • No smart watch e.g. Apple Watch may be worn at all in the exam room
  • No mobile phones or notes of any kind in pupils’ pockets
  • Mobile phones and earphones are still banned around the school for exam pupils, just like everyone else

Exam pupils have received TWO personal paper copies of their exam timetable from WJEC on Friday 22 March. Each pupil’s timetable is different, depending on options and sets. It is essential that pupils do not lose this timetable. One copy is for the pupil and the other copy is to be put in a central place in the house for everyone to see e.g. on the fridge.

To see the timetable for each subject and each year group, you could look at the WJEC website. Their website includes all the summer and November exams and there is already a draft timetable for January and summer 2025:

Timetables for all WJEC exams

In order for parents to help their children prepare for the exams, we have organised meetings for parents in the past. Here is a recording of those meetings, one in Welsh, one in English:

Year 10 Arrangements

Year 10 will have exams in some subjects, but not in others. Because of this, year 10 pupils will, as usual, continue in lessons right through to the summer. On exam days they will be taken to the canopy to register and will go to their exam, before returning to lessons at the end of the exam. With the afternoon exams starting at 1pm, there will be arrangements for year 10 to have an early lunch on exam days, if they have an exam in the afternoon.

Year 11 Arrangements

Year 11 will have lessons and revision sessions right up until the exams. Once the exams start on 9 May, pupils will be free to study at home from 9 May onwards, but attending school promptly to sit their exams.

Farewell Day

On Friday 3 May, year 11 pupils will have their Farewell Day. They will be at school until 10:50am, which is the end of lesson 2. They will then walk together down to St Peter’s Rugby Club for food and games – Miss Yapp has been busy organising some food and lots of merriment. They will finish at 2:30pm in St Peter’s. Pupils who need to catch a school bus will walk back up to school with the staff in order to be there by 3pm. There will also be a choice for pupils to walk home directly from St Peter’s or get a lift from there. Please park considerately around St Peter’s – there is a doctor’s surgery next to the rugby club and the neighbours can get annoyed if they get blocked in.

Revision Sessions

The year 11 exam period and “study leave” both start on 9 May. Revision sessions and lessons will continue on the 7th and 8th for everyone, before the exams start on the 9th. Some pupils will have a Numeracy exam on the 9th (the majority have completed this in November) and then there is a Drama exam in the afternoon. On the 10th, there will be a Science exam for everyone, and then German for some pupils in the afternoon. The following week, there will be a host of different exams, and that will continue until after Whitsun.

Last Chance Saloon

Returning after Easter, this is the last chance for pupils to use their teachers’ subject knowledge and expertise in preparing for the exams. A small minority of pupils continue to waste time rather than getting on with their work – this will be the last chance to prepare. Thanks very much to you as parents for your support of the school as we try to ensure the best for your children. Depending on options, many pupils have over 20 exams – there is a lot of work to do.

Speaking Exams and Performances

A number of GCSE speaking exams are always held in the window between Easter and the beginning of the written exams. Please make sure that your child has revised, and is present and punctual on the day. These are WJEC dates, so they cannot be changed:

12 April – GCSE Drama – performance exam
19 April – GCSE Welsh Literature – Llunyddiaeth – discussing Y Gwyll
25 April – GCSE German – speaking exam
26 April – GCSE German – speaking exam
2 May – GCSE French – speaking exam

Sixth Form Arrangements

The Sixth Form exam timetables have been distributed, so if students have not already received them, they will be with Mrs Rhys Roberts, the Sixth Form Learning Coach, immediately after the holidays. We have provided two copies of the timetable, one for the students and one for parents / guardians. It is important that students check their timetables in detail, ensuring that all component units for each subject are there. If there is a problem, they need to contact Miss Lindsay Lewis, our Exams’ Officer immediately.

Year 12 Exams

Year 12 will finish their lessons formally on 10 May in order to sit their exams. We wish everyone well, and if anyone needs help during this period, we encourage everyone to contact their subject teachers or the Sixth Form team. Year 12 will return to lessons full time after the exams on 10 June, in order to start year 13 courses and start the UCAS process.

Year 13 Exams

Year 13’s final day of lessons will be on Thursday 16 May, and we will formally say goodbye to them on Friday 17 May. Year 13 have been such a lovely group of pupils since year 7 and they will be greatly missed here at Bro Edern. On the Friday, there will be a leavers’ assembly, then students will travel with a few staff to Pizza Express, Cardiff Bay for lunch. The order form for Pizza Express is on an e-mail for students and payments need to be made on ParentPay as soon as possible, please. Students will be free to continue their celebrations from Cardiff Bay. Exact timings of the day are to be confirmed. We are aware that some year 13 students have a re-sit exam on the Friday morning, therefore in fairness to everyone, the assembly will begin once the exam has finished.

UCAS Fayre – Year 12

On Monday 22 April, year 12 students will attend the annual UCAS fayre, which is being held at the ICC, the huge centre under the Celtic Manor Hotel in Newport. We ask all year 12 students to attend as the vast majority of UK universities will have stalls there, as well as other providers, in order for students to consider their post-Bro Edern futures. Students may wear their own clothes and should be in the Sixth Form Lounge promptly at 8:30am.

Work Experience – Year 12

Year 12 have a dedicated week to conduct a work experience placement during the last week of the summer term (15/7/24 – 19/7/24). Students need to organise their own placement and provide details of the placement on a Google Form sent via e-mail by Miss Land. The Sixth Form team looks forward to visiting as many students as possible on placement during the week. If students are having difficulty finding suitable placements, this needs to be mentioned to Mrs Rhys Roberts as soon as possible.

Prom Payments – Year 13

The 2024 Sixth Form Prom will be held for year 13 and staff on Saturday night 29 June at the Leonardo hotel in the middle of town (the old Park Hotel). Thank you to our head pupils and Sixth Form students for their organisation. Payments for the evening are open on ParentPay, with details for students and staff who wish to attend the evening but have not yet paid. Payment is required as soon as possible, so that we can pay the hotel.

Personal Assessments Years 7, 8 a 9

Personal Assessments for years 7, 8 and 9 will be held in the second and third weeks of the new term after Easter. The pupils will complete the assessments on their Chromebooks under exam conditions in the Sports Hall or in the Cabin. These are a continuation of the national tests your child sat annually in their primary school.

Your child will be expected to come to school with a fully charged Chromebook, just like any other day. A calculator and headphones (that fit in the Chromebook) will also be required for the Numeracy Reasoning assessment. We kindly ask that you do not arrange any appointments or holidays for your child, as the dates have been on the school calendar (and published to parents) since last summer, and these are important national assessments. If there is a problem with your child’s Chromebook, the form tutor needs to be told urgently, so that we can try to resolve the situation.

Every pupil will have 4 assessments:

Welsh – Reading
English – Reading
Numeracy – Procedural
Numeracy – Reasoning

Here is the timetable:

Year 7 and 8 Subject Assessments

Also, subject assessments will be held at the same time as the Personal Assessments, in a block of three weeks for years 7 and 8. These have also been on the calendar since last summer’s blog.

In order for your child to start preparing for the assessments, here are details from the different departments about what needs to be revised. The assessment timetable will follow; but for your information, these will take place in lessons, in the usual classroom, in weeks 2, 3 and 4 of the new term after Easter.

All the information about the subjects holding assessments can be found in this document. If there is no information, there is no assessment in the subject:

Details of Year 7 and 8 Assessments and Revision List

Kitzbühel Skiing Trip

A group of pupils and staff have gone to Kitzbühel, Austria to ski during the first week of the Easter holidays, and we wish them all the best on the slopes. They are expected to arrive back at Bro Edern around 6pm on Friday 29 March, which is the Good Friday Bank Holiday. Staff will ask the pupils to contact you directly to update you with an exact return time, depending on traffic.

Here is the view from the hotel on the first day:

Exchange Trips

A big thank you to the families who hosted pupils from Nantes during our latest exchange in February. Our friends from Brittany had a great time in Cardiff. Thank you for all your kindness towards them. We are very much looking forward to returning to stay with our exchange partners in June. Our pupils will leave Cardiff on Saturday 15 June and return the following Saturday, 22 June.

In 2025, the MFL Department’s exchange trip will be to Grünstadt in Germany, because we organise Grünstadt and Nantes every other year. This exchange will be open to the pupils who are currently in years 7 and 8, when they will be in years 8 and 9. The Germans will visit us in the spring of 2025 and we will return to Grünstadt in the summer of 2025. Details to follow by the end of the summer term, but plenty of time for you to ponder and start saving in the meantime.

Visit to Glan-llyn

Another trip planned for current year 7 pupils is the trip to the Urdd centre in Glan-llyn, near Bala in October, when they will be in year 8. This is an annual trip to enjoy all the activities at Glan-llyn and visit Tryweryn. Full details of the trip will be announced to pupils later in the term. Once again, an opportunity for you to consider and start saving.

Visit to Real Madrid

70 pupils from years 8 to 11 had an amazing time visiting Madrid and the Real Madrid club with the PE Department during February half term. They had plenty of opportunites to train, visit the club’s facilities and see a match at the Bernabéu stadium, when Real Madrid won 4-0 against Girona. A brilliant experience and plenty of goals!

Visit to Berlin

Likewise, the year 10 and 11 German GCSE pupils had an unforgettable week in Berlin before the start of this term. We managed to visit many of the most famous places in this incredible city and had plenty of opportunity to practice speaking German. We even had some snow! Thanks to the pupils for being such fun and so enthusiastic all week.

The finals were in Rotherham at the Magna Centre on the 13 and 14 March where the best 60 teams from across the UK competed for a place in the World Finals. Both days were broadcast live on YouTube including the racing and the awards ceremony. All our pupils were amazing and competed enthusiastically, always with smiles on their faces. Congratulations also to Chloe and Bella, who were chosen to help arrange this year’s competition and act as judges. An amazing achievement!

We are still waiting for the full results, but during the awards ceremony we discovered …

Hypernova – nominated for a Project Management Award

Hypernova – Won a place in the 2024 World Finals!

We are awaiting the announcement about the location of the 2024 World Finals, but they are likely to be a long way from Cardiff and are unlikely to be in Europe. The Hypernova pupils have competed solidly for four years, and they have finally got the plaudits that they deserve. All credit to them for persevering over a long period of time and thanks once again to Mr Dewi Thomas for continuing to support them. The Hypernova team would really appreciate help with any possible sponsorship leads or fundraising opportunities via the wider Bro Edern community. If you personally, or a business you are associated with, could help in any way, then please contact Mr Dewi Thomas on his new e-mail address: Dewi.Thomas@broedern.cymru

EESW Award

Beyond all the Formula 1, huge congratulations go also to the team who won an award this week for Best Appreciation of Safety Issues at the big EESW event at the Swansea Arena. There were many schools there competing, so this was quite a feat.

Annie

Huge congratulations to the pupils who were busy performing our musical Annie recently. There was a matinée for the Cluster’s primary schools and then performances over three nights in the school hall. There were great performances throughout the week with the main characters, the chorus and the band all doing an excellent job. Many thanks to all the staff involved with the performance, especially Mrs Awen Thomas, Miss Jo Griffiths and Miss Bethany Randall.

Eisteddfod yr Urdd

The Cardiff and Vale’s reputation for a lively county Eisteddfod of the highest standard continued once again this year. A number of pupils went to Barry to compete in the Memorial Hall, the week after Annie, both individually and in groups. Alys Jones from year 12 will go on to represent Bro Edern at the National Urdd Eisteddfod, as she won the Under 19 Individual Theatrical Performance. Many congratulations! We are really looking forward to seeing her perform in Meifod.

Dydd Miwsig Cymru

Some year 10 and 11 GCSE Music pupils went over to Pentrebane Primary School to perform popular songs for the whole school to celebrate Dydd Miwsig Cymru (Welsh Language Music Day). Everyone enjoyed seeing Iolo Williams, Amelia Chadd, Nel Davidson and Ruby Warren-Dimech performing ‘Yma o Hyd’, with all the pupils singing along. Great to see so many non-Welsh speaking pupils enjoying singing under the guidance of our pupils. Thanks to Pentrebane for the kind invitation.

News from the Cyfeillion (PTA)

The Cyfeillion have been busy, as usual, raising money and helping the school. They have recently raised over £1,000 for Bro Edern. Their presence at our parents’ evenings throughout the year has been very welcome and they offer a vital service to the school’s families with the Swap Shop. Thanks also for their work throughout the week of Annie performances – a lot of money was raised over the three nights, and thanks to them for providing refreshments at the recent local Eisteddfod for the primary Cluster’s parents.

Dates of the next Swap Shop:

Wednesday 10 April
Wednesday 1 May

Date of next meeting:

Thursday 16 May 6pm at school.

The meeting will be held on the same night as the year 7 parents’ evening, in the hope of attracting some year 7 parents to join the Cyfeillion. We have a number of activities planned and an experienced crew to guide new year 7 parents throughout the coming year. Parents of pupils from any year are welcome, of course!

Please contact cyfeillionbe@gmail.com if you have any ideas or queries.

Cultural Evening

A date for the diary of all schools in the Cluster – Thursday evening 4 July. Following the great success of our first cultural evening, we will be opening our doors to the Cluster once again this year. Performances, exhibitions and refreshments will be available throughout the night. We have already arranged more people to run the barbecue this year!

Tafwyl

Menter Caerdydd has announced the Tafwyl dates for this year, which are Saturday and Sunday 13 and 14 July in Bute Park, behind the castle. Like every year, we expect to see all Bro Edern pupils there enjoying themselves at some point during the weekend with their friends. Tafwyl is a fantastic festival for young people, and we are keen to see all our pupils benefit this great festival, which is free of charge for everyone. The group Dadleoli, 3 of whom are Bro Edern pupils, will perform on the main stage.

As per usual, year 9 will receive work based on their visit to Tafwyl.
Please put the date in your diary now!
