Exams Cancelled

Hello Everyone

Greetings once again from Bro Edern – just a short blog for you today, with an update following Kirsty Williams’s announcement yesterday. As I’m sure you know by now, she has decided that next summer’s exams will be cancelled. I’m sure that this is a huge relief for many pupils, and for you as parents. However, behind these headlines there are many important issues to be decided, and we must prioritise both the academic progress and the wellbeing of Bro Edern pupils as we face those decisions.

Because of the announcement, we have decided to postpone the year 11 mock exams which were due to take place before Christmas. We will revisit the requirements for year 11, 12 and 13 mock exams once we have a clearer idea of the expectations for the rest of the year.

Today, we have far more questions than answers about the requirements of all our pupils’ exam courses between now and the end of the year. We have therefore decided to change the nature of the year 11 parents’ evening which is next Thursday 19 November. It is currently impossible for the teachers to tell you as parents what the priorities are for all aspects of your child’s work.

Instead of the year 11 parents’ evening, we have decided to hold online meetings with exam updates for parents of years 10, 11, 12 and 13. We will be holding a traditional year 11 parents’ evening when the requirements of all the different subjects are clearer to us, so that the information from staff is relevant and up to date.

The meetings next Thursday will be held online, with a choice of times for you as families.

You will have the opportunity to gather the latest updates from the school’s perspective and have the opportunity to ask questions online by typing in the on-screen chat.

Year 8 Chromebooks

We are finally expecting the year 8 Chromebooks to arrive this Friday morning! The delivery has been scheduled by the county. In order for your child to take home their Chromebook on Friday night, the following must be in place:

  • A completed Acceptable Use Policy: https://forms.gle/jZahaa4VGnVtMcU38
  • A minimum insurance payment of £10 on ParentPay by Thursday night (tomorrow)
  • A bag / plastic bag must be brought to school on Friday for your child to transport the Chromebook box home, without it being visible to others. They will be able to return to school on Monday with the Chromebook in their usual school bag, without the box.

Thanks very much to those of you who have already completed the necessary steps. Any problems, please contact the Head of Year 8, Mr Kerry Lerwill: KLerwill@ysgolbroedern.cardiff.sch.uk

We will continue to keep you updated with all the latest from Bro Edern. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing year 10,11,12 and 13 parents at our online meetings next week.

Best wishes

Iwan Pritchard
